Real experiences from real travelers
The Shinkansen trip was a highlight of our Japan vacation. Using the JR Pass made it so easy to hop from Tokyo to Hiroshima. The Peace Park was incredibly moving.
We booked the day tour to Miyajima and it was perfect. The guide knew exactly when the tide would change for the best photos of the gate. Highly recommended.
The history is heavy but necessary. Afterward, having Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki was a delicious comfort. The train ride is long but comfortable.
We used the Kansai-Hiroshima pass. It saved us so much money compared to individual tickets. The ferry ride to the island is stunning.
Our guide for the Peace Memorial Museum provided context that we wouldn't have gotten from just reading the plaques. A must-do experience.
Everything you need to know for your journey
Yes, the JR West Miyajima Ferry is covered by the National Japan Rail Pass and the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass. However, you must pay a small visitor tax (approx. 100 yen) separately at the terminal.
The journey takes approximately 4 hours on the direct Nozomi train (requires supplement) or about 5 hours using the Hikari and Sakura trains (fully covered) with a transfer at Shin-Osaka.
Standard JR Pass holders cannot ride the Nozomi or Mizuho trains unless they purchase a special upgrade ticket before boarding. Most pass holders use the Hikari and Sakura trains which are fully included.
While not mandatory for the unreserved cars, seat reservations are highly recommended, especially during peak seasons and for peace of mind. They are free for JR Pass holders.
The National JR Pass covers the entire country including Tokyo to Hiroshima. The Kansai-Hiroshima Pass only covers the region from Osaka/Kyoto to Hiroshima and does NOT cover the trip from Tokyo to Osaka.
One day is a tight squeeze but possible if you start very early. A 2-day itinerary is recommended to fully appreciate the Peace Memorial Museum and explore Miyajima Island without rushing.
Passengers with luggage with overall dimensions (length + width + height) between 160cm and 250cm must reserve seats with an oversized baggage area. Failure to do so may result in a fine.
Spring (March-May) for cherry blossoms and Autumn (October-November) for stunning fall foliage are the best times. Summer can be hot and humid.
Miyajima Island serves excellent grilled oysters street-side, and many restaurants in Hiroshima city center, particularly in the Okonomimura building, specialize in local oyster dishes.
